Windhoek: Zimbabwe suffered a seven-wicket defeat to South Africa in their opening match of the FNB T20 Tri-Series at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Olympia, Windhoek, on Saturday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, after winning the toss and electing to bat, Zimbabwe struggled to build sustained momentum against a disciplined South African bowling attack and eventually posted 144 runs for eight from their 20 overs. Ben Curran provided Zimbabwe with an explosive start, smashing 24 runs from just 12 deliveries, but his departure triggered a steady flow of wickets that prevented the Chevrons from establishing a commanding total.
Dion Myers contributed 17 runs before falling to Bjorn Fortuin, while Brian Bennett top-scored with a patient 34 from 35 balls. Bennett was eventually bowled by Prenelan Subrayen, who also dismissed Ryan Burl as Zimbabwe slipped to 94 runs for five in the 16th over. Captain Sikandar Raza endured a difficult outing, scoring only 10 points from 17 balls before he was caught by Jordan Hermann off the bowling of Eathan Bosch, leaving Zimbabwe in desperate need of late acceleration.
Tadiwanashe Marumani provided exactly that, smashing 30 from just 13 balls, including three sixes. His aggressive innings formed part of a rapid 43-run sixth-wicket partnership with Wessly Madhevere, although both batters fell within the space of two deliveries late in the innings. Duan Jansen was South Africa's leading bowler with three wickets for 45 runs, while Subrayen claimed two for 27. Bosch, Kwena Maphaka and Fortuin took one wicket apiece as Zimbabwe finished on 144 runs for eight.
Meanwhile, South Africa's reply initially offered Zimbabwe some hope with Lhuan-dre Pretorius striking 22 from 13 balls before departing, while Jordan Hermann added 20 from 13 as Zimbabwe reduced South Africa to 61 for two inside the opening six overs. However, Dewald Brevis, who continued with his impressive batting from the opening match against Namibia, then turned the contest decisively in South Africa's favour.
The young batter produced a breathtaking display of power hitting, smashing six sixes and seven fours in an unbeaten 75 from only 32 balls. His assault effectively ended Zimbabwe's hopes of defending their modest total. Brevis shared a 46-run third-wicket partnership with Tony de Zorzi, who made 15 before being caught behind off Blessing Muzarabani. Brevis remained unmoved, continuing his onslaught until South Africa reached their target with more than six overs to spare. Rubin Hermann, unbeaten on 11 from seven balls, joined Brevis at the finish as South Africa completed a convincing seven-wicket victory.
The result gives South Africa their first points of the tri-series following their opening defeat by hosts Namibia.
