Keetmanshoop annual mayoral cup launched

KEETMANSHOOP: Keetmanshoop mayor, McDonald Hanse on Tuesday launched the 2024 edition of the annual Mayoral Cup, set to take place later this year.

While launching the tourney Hanse said sports programmes are powerful vehicles for achieving and advancing development and peace agenda.

‘Let us come together in the spirit of sports, fostering connections and friendships that will endure beyond the boundaries of the sports field. Sport can transform individuals, it bolsters physical, psychological, emotional and social well-being and development,’ he said.

Hanse said currently only one sport code – football – will feature in the tournament. He urged the organising team to come up with other sports codes to add to the annual event.

A member of the tournament organising committee, Owen Vlees said the proposed date for the tourney is 27 April 2024, but it is yet to be finalised.

‘We do not want this tourney to clash with the dates when the first, second and third division leagues resume their games because we w
ill need those teams for the tourney,’ he added.

Vlees said the tournament provides a platform for the youth of the region to showcase their talent and provides scouters with the opportunity to scout for raw talent.

The winners will walk away with N.dollars 25 000 in cash and a floating trophy, while the runner-up will walk away with N.dollars 15 000 and the semi-final losers will each walk away with N.dollars 5 000. The registration fee per team is N.dollars 1 800.

Teams from the first, second, and third divisions and non-league teams are expected to take part in the tourney.

MTC announces N.dollars 3 million volleyball sponsorship

WINDHOEK: Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) on Tuesday announced a three-year sponsorship worth N.dollars 3 million to the Namibian Volleyball Federation (NVF).

MTC’s Chief Human Capital and Marketing Officer, Tim Ekandjo, described the sponsorship as an opportunity to nurture talent and growth, adding that this will assist with the formation of the MTC volleyball premiership.

He said the MTC premiership will be contested by eight male and eight female teams for year one, for which the teams will be provided with branded gear.

‘I was invited to a volleyball match late last year and I was impressed with the passion. This partnership will ensure a strong premiership on the African continent and will diversify our portfolio,’ Ekandjo said.

The president of the Namibian Volleyball Federation, Hilary Imbuwa, expressed gratitude for the sponsorship, saying the expansion of the federation into the MTC Volleyball National League will foster sportsmanship and build a strong sense of community.

‘With MTC’s g
eneral support, we can now expand our reach, enhance the league’s infrastructure and provide even greater opportunities for our athletes to showcase their skills on a national stage. As a federation, we pledge to use these funds transparently, to inspire and contribute to sports in Namibia,’ said Imbuwa.

He said the federation’s goals and objectives would not be achieved without MTC’s support.

RDP calls on youth to participate in elections

WINDHOEK: Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) Secretary for Information and Publicity, Nghiningilwandubo Kashume, has called on the Namibian youth to take an active role in their futures by participating in the upcoming elections.

Speaking to Nampa here on Tuesday, Kashume said as the country prepares for the 2024 presidential and national elections, it is important for the youth to acquaint themselves and realise how important it is for them to take part in political decision-making through voting.

He said democracy is a new political system in Namibia and many people, especially the youth, do not understand what a multi-party democratic system constitutes.

‘By voting it means when the youth is demanding things to be done for themselves, they have done their part… You can’t demand a clinic, school, road or housing… basic necessities every citizen of our land requires, if you are saying ‘I’m the youth, I don’t want to participate in politics’,’ he stressed.

Kashume said RDP is taking part in the electi
ons and is scheduled to deliberate on the preparation for internal democratic elections on 24 February 2024, which will be followed by a fourth national convention to elect its national leadership.

He further said that RDP will discuss its election manifesto at the upcoming party congress, after which its contents would be made public.

‘There has been a tendency in this country where RDP presents its election manifestos and others go and plagiarise it. We don’t like it very much, but the time will come when we are ready to present our election manifesto,’ he noted.

He also called on Namibians to register their current voting cards as most would have expired.

‘A number of Namibians are looking forward to the RDP taking part in this election and they are determined. It is encouraging for the RDP’s outlook,’ he noted.

Nudo reinstates suspended and expelled members

OPUWO: The National Unity Democratic Organisation (Nudo) on Saturday resolved to adopt the National Executive Committee’s recommendations and reinstate suspended and expelled party members who were accused of fragmenting party legislation and sowing disunity, among other reasons.

This is according to a statement issued on Tuesday by Kapukatua Kuvare, Nudo National Council’s vice chairperson.

Nudo’s National Council in a meeting in Windhoek on Sunday resolved to lift the suspension of National Council member Ambros Mundjindjiri and reinstate him to his previous position, as well as the reinstatement of former long-serving Okakarara constituency councillor Vetaruhe Kandorozu, who faced off against Utjiua Muinjangue in the party’s internal election for the top nine members of Nudo’s leadership in 2019 and lost by a small margin.

Following the election in which the majority of Kandorozu’s camp members lost to Muinjangue’s faction, the party became embroiled in a war of words between the two factions, prompting
the current leadership to suspend and ultimately remove Kandorozu from the party.

Kandorozu was accused of orchestrating an anti-Muinjangue campaign during the 2020 presidential and national assembly elections, urging his supporters to vote for former independent candidate Panduleni Itula, who currently serves as the President of Independent Patriots for Change.

‘After a lengthy discussion on this topic, the NC confirmed the NEC’s decision of October 2022 to re-instate the expelled members as ordinary members without their previous positions as a punishment for their transgression for sowing disunity within the party,’ stated Kuvare.

Furthermore, Kuvare added that the party reinstated Nudo council members Veneruru Korumbo and Mbamanovandu Tuamunika following a protracted period of disciplinary proceedings in which they were accused of bringing the party into disrepute.

During Sunday’s meeting, the party endorsed the NEC’s decision to hold the National Elective Congress on 27 April 2024 in Windhoek.

Accor
ding to Kuvare, the opposition party has formed a National Elective Congress Organising Committee (NGOC) that will report to the Secretary-General (SG) and includes Nockey Kaapehi, Israel Hukura, Nokokure Veii, Vetondisa Tjijenda, Chief Boas Tjingaete and Chief Rukambe Uazukuani.

Nuunyango urges business community to support learners

ONIIPA: The Oniipa Constituency Councillor in the Oshikoto Region, Vilho Nuunyango is urging businessmen and women to support learners and students.

Nuunyango said this in an interview with Nampa after he donated 6 000 sanitary pads to eight schools at Oneputa Combined School in the Oniipa circuit of the Oshikoto Region on Monday.

He said the business community should assist the learners with stationery and other basic needs, especially during the beginning of the year.

Nuunyango said that giving back to the learners and students will be a good opportunity to motivate learners to perform well.

‘Our learners are not inspired enough because there are no people who motivate them with gifts so they can feel motivated to perform better in their academics,’ said Nuunyango.

He said that elders hold a high responsibility to invest in the learners’ school performances and maintain their behaviour.

‘As elders of our society, we strongly need to encourage our learners to behave well because they are the leaders of
tomorrow,’ Nuunyango said.

He also encouraged parents and guardians to advise their children on the danger of drugs and alcohol abuse.

‘I encourage all the parents to advise their children not to do drugs or consume alcohol as this harms them,’ he said.

Nuunyango donated the sanitary pads to Oniipa Primary School, Omwandi Gwelago Primary School, Omukwiyu Gwemanya Combined School, Oshilulu Combined School, and the Onampadhi, Oneputa, Onalulago and Onzinzi combined schools.

He said there are five more schools that he will assist before the end of this year and plans to assist more schools next year.

Nuunyango said he is committed to supporting girls for now as they are mostly faced with challenges during lessons.

‘We want to make sure that the adolescent girls are safe in schools compared to the past when they were never taken care of, which also demoralised them.’

Aiyambo addresses Onaushe Combined School learners on staying safe

ONAUSHE: The Head of the Namibian Police Force’s Oshana Community Policing Sub-division, Inspector Thomas Aiyambo, has advised parents to ensure that their children sleep in separate rooms to avoid possible rape incidents from occurring.

Aiyambo was speaking during a ‘Be Safe’ campaign held at the Onaushe Combined School on Tuesday, where he addressed learners on how to stay safe.

He said there have been allegations of children being raped by their siblings and in some of these cases, girls have been impregnated, hence the advice for them not to share bedrooms once they reach a certain age.

‘These situations remain unreported, which is incorrect. Such reports ought to be reported to the headmen and/or teachers, as well as the police, who will conduct an inquiry,’ he said.

Aiyambo also urged learners to walk to and from school in groups to avoid sexual assault and said if they are attacked, they should seek help.

This comes after two recent incidents of rape were reported in the region involving learners.
The first incident was reported at the Etambo dumping site on 16 January 2024, where an 11-year-old girl headed to school was raped by an unknown suspect.

In the second incident, Aiyambo indicated that a 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped behind Oshana Mall by an unknown suspect on 18 January 2024, while coming from school.

School uniforms donated to learners at Onaushe Combined School

ONAUSHE: The Action Based Organisation on Tuesday handed over school uniforms worth over N.dollars 10 000 to learners of Onaushe Combined School in the Oshana Region.

The school is located about 70 kilometres west of Oshakati and has a learner population of over 300, with 40 per cent of the learners being from marginalised communities.

According to Zackary Itodo, the organisation’s initiator, the Agra Staff Initiative Fund (ASIF) availed school uniforms and shoes upon his request for assistance towards the school.

‘The donation comes in the form of assisting learners who are in need of school uniforms but due to financial constraints, their parents are unable to afford a proper uniforms,’ he stated.

He added that the mission is to ensure that all children, regardless of background, can have proper uniforms and feel a sense of belonging within their schools.

Itodo further indicated that their goal is to reach more learners as a uniform represents a school’s identity, tradition and values.

The school’s pr
incipal, Gabhard Amunyela, stated that the donation will make a difference in the lives of their learners and hopefully boost their morale in school.

‘Many of the parents are struggling to buy proper school uniforms,’ he said, thanking the organisation for the donation as such initiatives go a long way to empowering the Namibian child.

MVA’s Divundu Emergency Centre receives ambulance

WINDHOEK: The Road Fund Administration (RFA) on Tuesday handed over an ambulance to the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund for use by the Divundu Emergency Centre in the Kavango East Region.

Receiving the donation, MVA Fund Chief Executive Officer Rosalia Hausiku said the distance between Kavango East and the Zambezi Region made it difficult for medics to attend to road accidents in time, hence the establishment of the emergency centre at Divundu about a year ago.

The emergency centre was equipped with a response vehicle which allowed medics to get to accident scenes, but it could not transport patients.

‘The new ambulance is expected to eliminate this challenge,’ Hausiku said.

Handing over the donation, RFA CEO Ali Ipinge said it is within the fund’s mandate to bring services closer to people.

‘We took it upon ourselves to partner with the MVA Fund to deliver this ambulance to help our citizens in the regions of Kavango East and Zambezi,’ he said.

The ambulance, which was converted into a 4×4 vehicle, i
s valued at N.dollars 1.3 million.
