Srinagar: At least nine people were killed and 32 others injured after a pile of recovered explosives exploded at a police station in the Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said Saturday. The massive explosion took place late Friday at Nowgam police station in Srinagar, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the region's Police Chief Nalin Prabhat stated that nine people have died in the accident, with 32 others injured. He added that the nature of the blast was accidental and occurred while handling the confiscated explosives for taking samples for forensic examination.

The explosives, which had been recently recovered from Faridabad (Haryana), were brought to the region and kept at the police station as part of the investigation into a recent car bomb explosion in Delhi. The explosion, audible throughout Srinagar, severely damaged the police station and adjacent buildings. Police have initiated an inquiry into the explosion.

"The cause of this unfortunate incident is being inquired into," Prabhat further said. Following the explosion, a fire engulfed the building and several vehicles parked inside its premises. Eyewitnesses and video footage from the area show the blast ripping through the building, sending flames and thick smoke into the air.

Immediately after the blast, many fire tenders and ambulances were rushed to the police station to extinguish the fire and transport the injured to the nearest hospitals. A deadly car explosion near the Red Fort in Delhi on Monday killed eight people on the spot and injured 20 others. However, local media reports later put the death toll at 13.
