Agriculture Key to Reducing Youth Unemployment in Namibia: Nganate

Windhoek: Agriculture is one of the sectors that can help in solving youth unemployment in Namibia, Omaheke Governor, Pijoo Marikutuka Nganate, has said. Nganate made this remark at the official opening of the Employment Readiness Training and Small and Medium Enterprise Development Programme workshop underway at the Omaheke Regional Library in Gobabis.According to Namibia Press Agency, seventy youth are attending the five-day workshop, which started on Monday. It aims to mitigate the region's high youth unemployment rate by equipping young people with practical skills to transition from job seekers to self-reliant job creators. "Agriculture remains one of the key economic drivers of our region. Therefore, we need to encourage our young people to look beyond traditional methods of getting jobs and start recognising opportunities that exist within the agricultural sector," he said.Nganate stated that there are opportunities in areas such as livestock production, horticulture, food processing, value additi on, agricultural technology, transportation, and marketing. "We must move from simply producing raw products to creating businesses that add value to what our region produces. Our young people must see agriculture not only as a livelihood, but also as a business opportunity and a vehicle for wealth creation," he said.The governor encouraged participants to take full advantage of the knowledge and networks available to them during the workshop. The programme, Nganate said, equips people with practical tools that can improve their livelihoods and contribute to the economic development of their region. Meanwhile, Omaheke Education Director, Constance Wantenaar, also called on the youth to see agriculture as a pathway to sustainable livelihoods in a region blessed with fertile soil and grazing opportunities."Our young people of our region have the potential and willpower to become farmers, agri-preneurs, agricultural service providers, food processors, marketers, and innovators, among others," she said. The t raining is organised by the Omaheke Regional Library; Omaheke Regional Council; Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture; Ministry of Industrialisation and Trade; Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Land Reform; Social Security Commission, and other stakeholders.
