Windhoek: Government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that Namibia's emerging oil and gas industry creates meaningful economic opportunities for Namibians through local employment, supplier development, skills and technology transfer, and increased participation in the sector.

According to Namibia Press Agency, speaking at the fourth edition of the Namibia Oil and Gas Conference (NOGC) in Windhoek on Wednesday, Minister of Industries, Mines and Energy Modestus Amutse said local content should not be viewed as an obstacle to international investors, but as a framework for building a sustainable industry that benefits Namibian businesses, workers, and communities.

Amutse emphasized that 'local content is not an axe on your business,' stressing that international investors remain welcome to bring capital, technology, and expertise to Namibia. He noted that Namibia's regulatory framework remains clear, while the government continues to exercise its mandate over industrialisation, energy, and downstream petroleum activities.

'The National Upstream Petroleum Unit, placed under the Office of the President, is intended to strengthen coordination and accountability in the management of the upstream petroleum sector,' Amutse stated. He also encouraged businesses to use the conference and exhibition as platforms to build partnerships, pursue opportunities, and prepare for increased activity as Namibia's oil and gas industry develops.

Amutse reiterated the government's commitment to creating an enabling environment for investment while ensuring that Namibia's oil and gas resources contribute to long-term economic development. He urged investors, businesses, and other stakeholders to work collaboratively to build a competitive industry that creates jobs, strengthens local businesses, and delivers lasting benefits for current and future generations of Namibians.
