Bernard Esau Requests Alternative Transport for Court Appearances

Windhoek:Lawyers for former Fisheries and Marine Resources Minister Bernard Esau have requested that he be transported in a sedan or bus for court appearances due to his health conditions.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Esau's representation, the Metcalfe Beaukes law firm, argued in the Windhoek High Court that the current van transport arrangements are unsuitable and unsafe, given his age of 69 and health issues. Esau also claimed that he does not pose a risk to police officers and could travel with them when he and his co-accused are brought to court.

Judge Eileen Rakow, however, stated she could not make a decision on the transport matter, as she is not the trial judge. She noted that such issues are handled by the Namibian Police Force and the Namibia Correctional Services. The case is scheduled to return to court on 11 November 2026.

Esau was arrested in 2019 along with several others, including former justice minister Sakeus Shanghala and Ricardo Gustavo. They are accused of receiving bribes from the Icelandic fishing company Samherji in exchange for fishing quotas.
