Members of the newly elected German Bundestag are in Namibia to improve bilateral relations and to implement a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed by the two institutions.

A statement by the National Assembly on Tuesday said the group has met with the Speaker, Peter Katjavivi, and secretary to the House, Lydia Kandetu to discuss their current MoU and their bilateral relationship.

“Michelle Muntefering, Chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Parliamentary Friendship Group reaffirmed the group’s commitment towards deepening and strengthening parliamentary bilateral relations,” the statement read.

They plan to work together on parliamentary administration, digitalisation, research, participatory democracy and strengthened oversight.

“Muntefering noted that there is a wide range of opportunity for both parliaments to work together and for members of parliament to engage with their counterparts on issues of common interest,” the statement added.

The group also met with their Namibian counterparts who recently visited the German Bundestag including Evelyn !Nawases-Taeyele, Isaak Vries, Phillipus Katamelo, Rebecca Ndjoze-Ojo and Edson Edmund Isaaks.

“This visit, therefore, reinforces the special relationship between Namibia and Germany,” it said.
