Phnom Penh: Cambodian King Norodom Sihamoni presided over the National and World Environment Day on Thursday under the theme "Beat Plastic Pollution." The ceremony saw the attendance of Prime Minister Hun Manet, national leaders, foreign diplomats, relevant stakeholders, and thousands of locals and students.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the event commenced with a performance aimed at educating the public on the adverse effects of plastic pollution, followed by several speeches. In his address, King Sihamoni commended the Cambodian government for its dedication to protecting the environment and natural resources. He emphasized the importance of living in harmony with nature, advocating for respect, sustainable usage, and the prevention of environmental destruction as a sacred responsibility for future generations.
The king highlighted that Cambodia's natural wealth is integral to the nation's identity and culture, underscoring the historical balance between humans and nature as a core aspect of Cambodia's traditions and beliefs. He expressed gratitude to citizens for their efforts in environmental conservation, resource protection, and the promotion of sustainable development.
Minister of Environment Eang Sophalleth mentioned that Cambodia initiated a plastic-free campaign on September 1, 2023, with over 11 million supporters to date. He reiterated the country's commitment to achieving 60 percent forest cover and carbon neutrality by 2050.
