COVID-19: Namibia records 214 new cases and 18 deaths

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, has announced that Namibia on Wednesday recorded 214 new COVID-19 cases and 18 deaths, bringing the total number of deaths to 3 244.

Shangula, in the daily COVID-19 update on Thursday, said four of the reported deaths occurred between 17 to 21 July and 11 occurred between 03 to 08 August, while three were recorded within the 24-hour reporting cycle.

The minister announced that the newly confirmed cases were identified from 1 567 results received from laboratories in the last 24 hours and represent a 14 per cent positivity ratio.

These cases have a gender distribution of 118 female and 96 male patients, with the youngest being four months old and the oldest, 96 years.

Shangula said among the confirmed cases 29 are learners, five teachers, three students and three healthcare workers. Out of all the confirmed cases, six people were reported to have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

||Kharas recorded the highest number of positive cases at 38, followed by Omusati 35, Khomas 31, Zambezi 21, Erongo 20, Ohangwena 17, Oshana 17, Oshikoto 11, Otjozondjupa eight, Hardap eight, Omaheke five and Kunene three.

Namibia on Wednesday had 10 009 active cases, of which 300 were hospitalised, from which 40 were in intensive care units.

In addition, 3 695 new recoveries were also recorded, bringing the total number of recoveries to 108 553.

A cumulative number of 179 324 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by Wednesday, while 65 556 had received their second dose.
