COVID-19: Namibia records 361 new cases, 23 deaths

Namibia on Sunday recorded 361 new COVID-19 positive cases and 23 new deaths, taking the country’s death toll to 2 834.

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula in the daily COVID-19 update on Monday said the newly confirmed cases were identified from 1 437 results received from laboratories in the last 24 hours, representing a 25 per cent positivity ratio.

He said the cases have a gender distribution of 210 female and 151 male patients, with the youngest being four days and the oldest, 101 years.

Zambezi recorded the highest number of positive cases at 74 followed by Erongo with 44 cases, Ohangwena 38, Omusati 34 while Oshikoto and Khomas recorded 31 cases each. Otjozondjupa stood at 27 cases, Oshana 22, Kunene 16, Kavango West 15, ||Kharas 14, Kavango East eight, Hardap six and Omaheke one case.

Among the new cases, 38 are learners, seven teachers, nine students from different institutions and nine are healthcare workers.

“Of all the confirmed cases, only one was reported to have received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine,” said Shangula.

Shangula said of the 23 deaths, the highest number of deaths were recorded from the Rehoboth district with 10 deaths – all occurring at home.

He also said the Windhoek district recorded one maternal COVID-19 death.

Among the deaths, one occurred in May and three in June while seven occurred between 01 and 11 July 2021. Ten died between 12 and 23 July whereas two died during the period under review.

Active cases on Sunday stood at 20 983 of which 516 are hospitalised and 113 are in intensive care units.

The country in addition recorded 257 new recoveries bringing the total number of recoveries to 93 136.

A cumulative number of 150 106 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by Sunday and 45 078 had received their second dose.
