Windhoek: The City of Windhoek (CoW) has issued a warning to the public regarding social gatherings in cemeteries within the city. The warning comes in response to growing concerns about inappropriate activities taking place in these solemn spaces.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the council released a media statement highlighting a rise in social gatherings occurring at cemeteries after burials. These gatherings have involved mourners consuming alcohol and littering, which has raised concerns about maintaining the sanctity of these locations.
CoW spokesperson Lydia Amutenya cited a recent incident at Gammams cemetery in Pioneerspark as a cause for concern. Mourners were observed hosting a gathering with seating arrangements after a burial, during which alcohol was consumed on the cemetery grounds.
Amutenya emphasized that such behavior is intolerable, as it disrupts the dignity of the deceased. "Such behaviour is unacceptable, as it disrespects the dignity of the deceased, disturbs other grieving families and undermines the solemn atmosphere of cemeteries," she stated.
The city council reiterated that cemeteries are reserved for burial services only. The consumption of alcohol and disposal of waste within these spaces are offenses that will not be tolerated. The City of Windhoek assured the public that it will continue enforcing strict monitoring to ensure that cemeteries remain places of peace, reverence, and dignity.
