Disability Empowerment Requires Collaboration: Nganate

Otjinene: Omaheke Governor, Pijoo Nganate, has said that while government remains committed to improving the welfare of persons with disabilities, support from civil society organisations and other stakeholders is equally important. Nganate made the remarks during the commemoration of National Disability Day at Otjinene on Wednesday.According to Namibia Press Agency, the event was held under the theme, 'Building an Inclusive Namibia through Empowerment, Innovation, Accessibility and Equal Participation of Persons with Disabilities', and was organised by the Great Hearts Foundation in collaboration with the Otjinene Constituency Office. Nganate stated that the government is dedicated to advancing the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities through policies and programmes aimed at promoting accessibility, social protection, education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.However, Nganate emphasized that government initiatives alone are not sufficient to achieve these objectives. He noted that meanin gful progress requires collaboration between civil society, the private sector, development partners, communities, families, and individuals. Organisations working in the disability sector play a vital role in building a more inclusive Namibia through advocacy, awareness creation, skills development, and direct support.The governor further highlighted that National Disability Day serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility to create a society where every person, regardless of physical, intellectual, sensory, or psychosocial ability, can participate fully and equally in all aspects of life.Otjinene Constituency Councillor Eben-Ezer Kauapirura expressed that understanding the needs of persons with disabilities in the constituency is an obligation. He stressed the importance of knowing the barriers faced by individuals with disabilities to effectively plan and advocate for improved services from the Omaheke Regional Council.Kauapirura added that greater understanding of these needs would ensure t hat the voices, ideas, and talents of persons with disabilities are reflected in every decision made in Otjinene. He commended the Great Hearts Foundation, led by Ngumee Kuhanga, for its contributions to improving the lives of persons with disabilities.The event also included the distribution of clothing, blankets, food items, and other essential goods to persons with disabilities.
