Khomasdal: A family of seven whose home was extensively damaged by heavy rainfall here over the weekend, has reported property losses estimated at more than N.dollars 500 000.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Karen Heita, who was at home when the incident occurred, said the family managed to secure important documents and some clothing, but most household items were destroyed by water.
'We managed to save most of our documents and clothes that were in cupboards. However, household items such as the fridge, beds, sofas and televisions, valued between N.dollars 500 000 and N.dollars 600 000, were damaged,' she said.
Heita explained that what began as light showers quickly intensified into heavy rain accompanied by strong winds, making it difficult to salvage belongings as water entered several rooms simultaneously.
'At first, I thought it was only certain areas leaking. While we were trying to save items in the kitchen or bedroom, we heard the ceilings in other rooms collapsing. Eventually, the entire ceiling came down,' she said.
The family has approached the City of Windhoek for assistance. The municipality's public relations officer, Lydia Amutenya, confirmed to Namibia Press Agency that the council's disaster and risk management team conducted an assessment to determine whether there was any immediate risk to life.
'The assessment concluded that there was no immediate danger identified,' she said.
The family has temporarily relocated to their garage, while some members are residing with relatives as they await assistance from their insurance company.
According to Heita, the insurer has advised them not to move any items until an official assessment is conducted.
'Currently, everything remains untouched in the house. We are relying on friends and family for support while waiting for the insurance report to be completed this week,' she said.
