Fiji: Fiji's current sewerage system is operating beyond capacity and cannot support major economic growth, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Biman Prasad said on Wednesday. Prasad highlighted that the wastewater infrastructure in Fiji is under severe strain and struggling to cope with demand, which poses a significant threat to the environment.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Prasad also pointed out that Fiji faces human resource shortages in the water and wastewater sector, emphasizing the urgent need for long-term capacity building. The government has taken steps to address this issue by signing a 385-million-Fijian-dollar (around 170 million U.S. dollars) support agreement under the Healthy Oceans and Water Supply Improvement Project.

He confirmed that while the investment is substantial, it remains within the country's fiscal targets, indicating a strategic approach to resolving the pressing infrastructure challenges without compromising financial stability.
