Gibeon: National Youth Council interim board member, Donna Gamatham, has described Independence Day as both a celebration of freedom and a call to responsibility, emphasising the role of youth in sustaining and advancing the country's democratic gains. Speaking in an interview with Nampa ahead of the Independence Day commemorations, Gamatham said the occasion represents the sacrifices made during the liberation struggle, while also serving as a reminder that independence remains an ongoing process.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Gamatham noted that independence is not a finished project; it is something that must be actively sustained and deepened. She highlighted that young Namibians have inherited a nation with great potential that requires their active participation to ensure freedom translates into equal opportunities and dignity for all. The youth acknowledged progress made since 1990, particularly in access to education, democratic freedoms, and participation platforms.

However, challenges such as unemployment, inequality, and limited economic opportunities continue to affect many young Namibians. Gamatham stated that while independence laid the foundation, the benefits are not yet equitably experienced. She pointed out that political freedom has been achieved, but economic empowerment remains uneven.

Gamatham further stressed that young people should position themselves as active drivers of change rather than passive observers, calling for greater involvement in decision-making, policy development, and governance structures. She encouraged youth to lead in entrepreneurship and innovation while contributing to social transformation within their communities.

Looking ahead, Gamatham expressed a desire to see reduced unemployment, improved alignment between education and industry needs, and increased access to funding for young entrepreneurs over the next 10 to 20 years. She also highlighted the importance of building an inclusive economy, strengthening institutions, and prioritising mental health, innovation, and digital transformation.

On nation-building, Gamatham urged young Namibians to actively participate in civic processes, hold leaders accountable, and engage in community development initiatives. She emphasized that nation-building requires collective effort, with young people cultivating responsibility, integrity, and collaboration as they are central to the country's development.
