Mariental:The Hardap Region has introduced its first Senior Primary Schools Spelling Bee Competition as part of a strategic initiative to enhance academic performance. This effort is underlined by a five-year turnaround plan aimed at revitalizing educational outcomes and service delivery in the region.

According to NAMPA, Hardap Regional Education Director Paulus Lewin emphasized the importance of this initiative during the competition held in Mariental. He highlighted that the 2025-2029 strategic plan consists of 12 objectives focused on restoring the region's dignity and improving educational results. Lewin acknowledged the region's past struggles with national academic performance but expressed optimism for improvement through targeted interventions.

The spelling bee is a key component of the region's academic improvement strategy, which also includes school visits and other measures to enhance teaching and learning. Lewin stressed the necessity of consistent efforts from educators, students, parents, and school management, noting that educational progress requires time and dedication. He also advocated for schools to maintain their facilities, as the learning environment can impact student experiences and behavior.

Senior Education Officer Lo-Ami Johannes remarked that the competition involved Grade 7 learners who excelled in spelling at the cluster level. Beyond spelling, the initiative aims to build confidence, concentration, critical thinking, and communication skills among students. Johannes encouraged participants to enjoy the experience and act as ambassadors of excellence for their schools.

The event saw participation from 40 learners representing 24 schools across the Hardap Region. Ruimte Primary School claimed first place, with Anna Maasdorp Combined School and Kaptein Dr Hendrik Witbooi Primary School finishing second and third, respectively. The top three learners are set to receive medals and stationery hampers at their schools. The competition's goal is to strengthen literacy by promoting spelling accuracy, vocabulary development, and improved reading and writing skills among senior primary school learners.
