Windhoek: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on Monday received a briefing from the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) and Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) about ICT services and ongoing connectivity projects in the Kunene Region ahead of its oversight visit.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Committee chairperson Sebastian Karupu emphasized that the visit is part of Parliament's oversight responsibility to monitor the implementation of ICT projects aimed at enhancing access to reliable communication services, especially in underserved communities. This mission will specifically evaluate the progress of the 2024/2025 Universal Service Fund projects, which are being implemented under a subsidy agreement signed in February 2025.

The projects include the rollout of mobile broadband connectivity infrastructure in five northern regions, including Kunene, with the aim of fostering universal access and bridging the digital divide. The committee plans to visit Ongongo Primary School and Clinic, Ehomba Primary School, and Orwe Primary School in the Kunene Region to assess the progress of the ICT infrastructure rollout and its impact on service delivery.

As part of the oversight programme, the committee will also engage with officials from the Ministry of Health and Social Services and the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture. These meetings aim to gather information on the provision and utilization of ICT in schools and clinics. Karupu stated, "Our oversight mission is to inspect construction works and verify the connectivity rollout at the identified sites."

He further noted that these visits will allow the committee to engage key stakeholders, evaluate the quality and functionality of ICT infrastructure, and assess its role in enhancing access to reliable communication services. The committee also aims to facilitate dialogue among Members of Parliament, MICT, MTC, regional and local authorities, and community representatives to bolster collaboration in expanding digital access.

Lastly, Karupu mentioned that the findings from this visit will be compiled into a report with recommendations to enhance operational delivery and accountability.
