Mariental: Mariental Urban Constituency Councillor, Iswarin Rooi, emphasizes that Independence Day serves not just as a celebration of freedom, but as a crucial reminder for leaders to fulfill their responsibility in ensuring the benefits of sovereignty reach every household.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Rooi highlighted in a recent interview the significance of translating political freedom into tangible socio-economic development. Reflecting on the progress made since independence, Rooi noted that Mariental has evolved from a small town with limited services into an expanding urban center in the Hardap Region. Key improvements include the expansion of road infrastructure, increased access to potable water from the Hardap Dam, and the electrification of more residential areas.

Rooi also pointed to advancements in education and healthcare, mentioning the development of institutions such as Mariental High School and the Mariental State Hospital as indicators of progress in enhancing residents' quality of life. Among the notable achievements, Rooi highlighted improved service delivery in informal settlements, particularly through the expansion of water points and sanitation facilities. Community empowerment efforts via constituency development funds and regional initiatives have also supported small businesses, women, and youth through micro-projects.

Additionally, the growth in local economic activities such as small-scale agriculture and retail, alongside the development of sports, particularly netball, has created opportunities for youth participation and engagement. Despite these strides, Rooi acknowledged ongoing challenges faced by the town, including high unemployment rates, especially among young people, and persistent housing shortages driving the expansion of informal settlements.

Rooi noted that limited economic diversification and recurring drought conditions impacting surrounding farming communities strain livelihoods, with increasing urban migration intensifying pressure on service delivery. She emphasized the need for continued collaboration between government, the private sector, and communities to address these challenges.

Delivering a message to Namibians, especially the youth, Rooi urged them to actively contribute to the country's development. She stated that freedom should not only be protected but used productively, encouraging the embrace of innovation, entrepreneurship, and education as tools for change. Rooi called on young people in Mariental and the Hardap Region to position themselves as active participants in development to ensure that independence continues to deliver opportunities and dignity for all Namibians.
