Tel Aviv: Israel is poised to escalate its military operations in the Gaza Strip should the Palestinian movement Hamas persist in rejecting a proposed temporary ceasefire and hostage exchange, as stated by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz. Katz articulated this stance on Wednesday, indicating a potential shift in Israel's military strategy if negotiations remain stalled.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the Israeli Defense Ministry released a statement quoting Katz, who emphasized the consequences of Hamas' continued resistance. "If Hamas continues its stubbornness, the operation [in the Gaza Strip] will expand and move to the next stages," he warned. This announcement underscores the heightened tensions and potential for increased conflict in the region.
Furthermore, Katz highlighted a significant development in the diplomatic landscape, noting Egypt's involvement. For the first time, Egypt has stipulated the disarmament of Hamas and the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip as prerequisites for a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. This condition marks a shift in regional dynamics and could influence future negotiations.
The situation remains tense following Israel's decision on March 18 to resume strikes on the Gaza Strip. This action was taken in response to Hamas' refusal to accept a US-brokered plan to extend the ceasefire, which had expired on March 1. In addition to military strikes, Israel has cut off electricity supplies to a desalination plant in Gaza and halted the entry of trucks carrying humanitarian aid, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
