Some Keetmanshoop youth in the Kharas Region on Thursday gathered at the town’s State hospital to appreciate and celebrate health care workers as Namibia commemorate Heroes Day.

The group spokesperson Innocent Pieters, said they decided to gather at the hospital to appreciate the health care workers for what they have done for their community during the devastating times of the COVID-19 pandemic adding that health care workers have outdone themselves since the pandemic hit the country in March 2020.

“We want to show you that we are thankful, you have done an excellent job, along the way you might have felt tired and wanted to give up, but you did not. You have put your lives and that of your loved ones at risk and we thank you for that. You are selfless, all to save the lives of total strangers, for that reason we have decided to do this for you today, you are our heroes,” he said.

Speaking to this news agency one of the health care workers, Gerald Frederick extended a word of appreciation towards the group.

“It is a very unique gesture, their bravery and forceful spirit encourage me personally, it is good especially for the elderly health care workers to see their kids take the lead and appreciate them. This has surely uplifted our spirits as health workers,” he said.

Andrea Boois a student nurse said “It is really a good thing they are sharing love and that they still care for us. It has really been hard waking up in the morning not knowing what is going to happen, if the situation will normalise or get worse, but what kept me going is to be able to help people.”

The group danced, sang and read poems to the health care workers to encourage them to go on with their work. They also provided a hot meal for the health care workers.

Namibia annually commemorates Heroes Day on 26 August in honour of the first armed battle of the Namibian liberation struggle which took place at the Omugulumbashe in the Omusati region on 26 August 1966.

This year’s commemoration marks precisely 55 years since the battle.
