A 27-year-old man was arrested at Okahandja on Sunday after he allegedly refused to stop for the presidential motorcade as it headed to Okahandja from the direction of Karibib.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Unit Commander for Community Affairs in the Otjozondjupa Region, Inspector Maureen Mbeha, in an interview with Nampa on Monday said the incident occurred at 16h08 on Sunday, approximately 13 kilometres southwest of Okahandja on the B2 public road.

“The suspect allegedly forced his way through by entering his vehicle into a closed off portion of the public road as the Head of State’s motorcade was passing through Okahandja on the B2 road,” said Mbeha.

The man allegedly became aggressive when a police officer followed his vehicle and instructed him to stop and remain stationary.

He then allegedly got out of his vehicle and pushed the officer several times until reinforcements were called. The man was arrested on the spot and his driver’s licence was confiscated, said Mbeha.

Amongst other charges laid against him were failure to remain stationary when stopped in a lane at a controlled intersection for the presidential motorcade, interfering with an authorised officer performing his policing functions, failure to stop a vehicle on the demand of a traffic officer in uniform, and failure to comply with the directives of a traffic officer in uniform.

The suspect is expected to appear in the Okahandja Magistrate’s Court this week.

Police investigations continue.
