New classrooms and storage rooms valued at N.dollars 2.6 million were officially handed over to Mukekete Senior Primary School in the Kavango West Region by retired German diplomat Wolfgang Fiedler on Monday.

Apart from the two blocks of classrooms and two storage rooms, the school also received a separate preprimary class with its own kitchen and ablution facilities.

The classrooms were handed over by Fiedler and his family, who have been assisting Namibian schools since 1978.

The donation comes as a relief for the school, where some learners were previously taught in temporary structures.

The management of the school wrote a letter to Fiedler in 2019 informing him that they were in need of better classrooms.

The classroom blocks were thus constructed in 2020.

So far the Fiedler family has assisted 56 schools in Namibia.

Last year the retired diplomat donated a hostel with a dining hall to Likwaterera Primary School in the Kavango East Region.

Speaking at the official handover, Fiedler said his family lobbies for funds in Germany from businesses and individuals to assist schools in Namibia.

Fiedler said he wanted to hand over the new facilities last year but due to COVID-19 restrictions, could not come to Namibia.

Acting Director of Education Herbert Karapo commended Fiedler and described him as a donor who always meets the government halfway.

‘In this way, the Namibian child can have access to education without any hindrances,’ he said.

The school’s principal Penehafo Haikali said Fiedler has managed to solve most of the problems the school faced as he also previously donated books and stationery.

She said the donation empowers learners to achieve their full potential and assist the government to get closer to its developmental goals.
