Windhoek: The Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund has issued an urgent advisory to motorists across the nation, urging them to exercise increased caution as persistent heavy rains contribute to dangerous driving conditions.

According to Namibia Press Agency, a media statement released on Thursday by the MVA Fund's Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, John Hausiku, highlighted the significant risks posed by waterlogged roads, impaired visibility, and rapidly flowing streams. Hausiku emphasized the severe threats to drivers, especially those attempting to traverse rivers during intense rainfall.

"Driving through moving water is highly dangerous. Strong currents can cause drivers to lose control, result in engine failure, or even sweep vehicles away. Motorists are strongly encouraged to avoid driving across rivers with flowing water, no matter how shallow they may appear," he stated.

The fund further noted the potential for even low-lying streams to develop strong currents capable of overturning or dragging vehicles and advised road users to always opt for safer routes by turning back when faced with such conditions.

Additional safety tips provided include reducing speed on wet roads, keeping a safe distance from other vehicles, using headlights during low visibility, and remaining fully focused while driving. Drivers are encouraged to brake, steer, and accelerate smoothly to minimize skidding risks and ensure their tires and windscreen wipers are in good working order.

"Exercising caution can save lives. Road users must avoid unnecessary risks and not underestimate the strength of moving water," Hausiku stressed.
