Namibia: Namibia is actively working to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its education system as part of the country's broader digital transformation agenda, Minister of Education, Sanet Steenkamp, has said.According to Namibia Press Agency, speaking to Nampa on Thursday during President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah's State visit to China, Steenkamp said the government is already implementing several digital education initiatives, including smart schools, digital schools, and the Giga project, which seeks to improve internet connectivity at schools. The next phase is to ensure AI is used responsibly to improve teaching and learning outcomes.Steenkamp remarked on the importance of strengthening existing digital education efforts with AI during her attendance at the Seminar on Namibia-China Cooperation on Education and Creative Industries, held at the China University of Geosciences in Beijing. The seminar brought together government officials, academics, and representatives from higher education insti tutions from both countries to explore collaboration in digital education, innovation, research, artificial intelligence, and creative industries as part of efforts to strengthen educational cooperation between Namibia and China.She explained that digital transformation extends beyond providing devices and internet connectivity and instead focuses on ensuring teachers and learners have continuous access to quality educational content. The government is working with the Namibian College of Open Learning (Namcol) to develop recorded lessons that learners can access whenever teachers are unavailable.Steenkamp emphasized the importance of technology as a tool to complement teachers rather than replace them. She noted that Namibia's collaboration with international partners continues to support the country's digital education agenda through improved connectivity and modern learning platforms. Discussions at the seminar reinforced the need for Namibia to accelerate digital transformation across all levels of ed ucation while leveraging China's experience in educational technology and innovation, she added.
