Walvis Bay:The Namibia Ports Authority (Namport), through its Social Investment Fund (NSIF), has donated waste management equipment valued at over N$2.7 million to the Walvis Bay Municipality. This donation aims to enhance waste collection and improve sanitation in the coastal town.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the donation includes a Hino 500 truck equipped with a 12-tonne skip loader, provided by Pupkewitz's Motor Division in Windhoek, along with 10 heavy-duty skips produced by WM Engineering based in Walvis Bay. At the handover ceremony, NSIF chairperson Amos Shiyuka highlighted that this investment is expected to mitigate littering and illegal dumping, improve sanitation and public health, and safeguard the coastal environment.
Shiyuka emphasized the importance of supporting local manufacturing and employment through sourcing the skips locally. He called on businesses, particularly those in Walvis Bay, to collaborate with the municipality in maintaining cleanliness.
Walvis Bay Municipality CEO Vicky Kapenda mentioned that this donation would bolster the town's waste collection capabilities, which are under strain due to population growth and daily influxes. She revealed that the municipality had also acquired two similar trucks and 50 skip containers to further aid waste management efforts.
Kapenda acknowledged that while the resources are insufficient to meet all needs, they are a significant help. She appealed for continued support from Namport and other stakeholders. Despite recent improvements in waste management, she stressed the necessity for additional resources to maintain progress. Kapenda also assured that the municipality would upkeep the donated equipment to ensure its effectiveness in keeping the town clean.
The NSIF, established in 2006, operates throughout Namibia, focusing on education, community health, and entrepreneurship.
