Windhoek: The 21st edition of the Nedbank Desert Dash was officially launched in Windhoek, with the 401-kilometre race set to take place from 05 to 06 December 2025. More than 1,000 riders are expected to test their mental and physical endurance as they cycle from Windhoek across the Namib Desert to the Platz am Meer Waterfront in Swakopmund.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Jo-Ann Manuel, the Director of Sport in the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, described the Nedbank Desert Dash as the world's longest single-stage mountain bike race. Manuel commended the event organisers and Nedbank Namibia for maintaining their long-standing partnership, highlighting that hosting the race for 21 years is a significant achievement. She noted that the event is a true test of endurance, mental strength, and the human spirit, while also generating economic activity through spending by cyclists, teams, and fans.
Swakopmund Mayor Blasius Goraseb stated that the event has become one of Namibia's most iconic sporting events, marking a key highlight in the country's tourism and economic calendar. He emphasized the economic stimulation it brings to small businesses and how it showcases the unique beauty and hospitality of the coastal community. Goraseb expressed gratitude towards Nedbank Namibia and their partners for their commitment to promoting sport, tourism, and environmental sustainability.
Event organiser Leander Borg of LEMA Events announced a revised start time for solo riders in this year's edition. Solo riders will now begin the race at 14h00, a change aimed at reducing the likelihood of them being towed by team riders. Borg mentioned that this adjustment was well received by leading solo cyclists, as previous races were affected by team dynamics, particularly through a technique known as 'slipping', where solo riders draft behind team participants to shield themselves from the wind.
