Sesriem:Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) employees at Sesriem in the Hardap Region continue to reside in tents nearly 11 months after a fire destroyed their housing, with no clear timeline for when permanent structures will be built.

According to NAMPA, the fire on December 2, 2025, destroyed all the workers' belongings, leading NWR to allocate tents as a temporary measure. Staff have reported that the tents are deteriorating, exposing them and their children to wind, vermin, snakes, and scorpions.

Isabella Munzimba, a waitress, expressed her frustration, stating that the delay in providing proper housing affects their performance. She described the living conditions as dire, with broken zippers and tents that do not shield them from the elements. Munzimba remarked on the expectation to maintain a positive demeanor at work despite the distressing living conditions.

NWR shop steward Erastus Kashikola criticized the resort management for prioritizing business operations over worker welfare. He noted the lack of a temporary closure following the disaster, which he believes has affected the quality of service provided by the unhappy workers.

Other staff members, speaking anonymously, highlighted safety and hygiene concerns, with vermin invading the temporary camp and insufficient progress in establishing new housing. They described how rats have damaged the tents and how they remain exposed to environmental hazards due to broken zippers.

Employee Olivia Sam emphasized the dangers posed by wildlife, lack of privacy, and sanitation issues, citing that torn tents leave workers vulnerable to snakes and scorpions. She also mentioned the inadequate privacy and shared ablution facilities, which contribute to poor hygiene conditions.

In response, NWR acting managing director Margaret Gustavo stated that NWR is working on long-term solutions for staff accommodation at Sesriem. She mentioned that specialised tents have been provided as an interim measure while arrangements for permanent housing are underway. Gustavo explained that developing accommodation within a national park involves compliance with procedures and consultations with relevant authorities. NWR plans to appoint a project management consultant for the planning and execution of the new housing project.
