Windhoek: Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Oshana regional commander Naftal Lungameni Sakaria has revealed that the region recorded a 24 per cent decrease in crime during the 2025/2026 festive season compared to the previous year. During his New Year's address and the launch of Operation Ndjadila on Thursday, Sakaria said 1,291 criminal cases were registered during the 2025/2026 festive season, down from 1,716 cases recorded during the 2024/2025 period.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Sakaria noted the decline in crime rates as a significant achievement. He emphasized a reduction in drunk-driving incidents during the recent festive season compared to the previous year, although there was an increase in road fatalities. Specifically, there were 37 cases of drunk driving recorded during the 2024/2025 festive season, compared to 34 cases reported in the 2025/2026 period. Road fatalities rose from two to seven over the same period.
Sakaria also mentioned progress in resolving complex and serious crimes, highlighting the swift resolution of an attempted murder case involving a public prosecutor and a murder case in Ondangwa. The suspects in these cases were apprehended within 24 hours, showcasing effective law enforcement measures.
Operation Ndjadila, launched to address housebreaking hotspots and target drugs, illicit goods, and other criminal activities, will run for two weeks with the possibility of extension based on results.
