Otjozondjupa Governor’s Cup underway at Grootfontein

The Otjozondjupa Governor’s Annual Cup for 2022, officially kicked off on Saturday morning at the Umulunga Sports Stadium in Grootfontein.

Governor James Uerikua officially opened the two-day event in the presence of 240 participants from all seven constituencies of Okahandja, Omatako, Okakarara, Otjiwarongo, Otavi, Grootfontein and Tsumkwe.

Constituencies councillors of Grootfontein, Otjiwarongo, Otavi and Tsumkwe, as well as the Governors of Kunene, Marius Sheya and Ohangwena, Walde Ndevashiya, were also present at the official opening.

The Otjozondjupa Governor’s Cup is an annual tournament in which the regional team members for the Under-20 soccer team and Under-19 regional netball team are normally selected.

“Our aim is also to expand this annual tournament in the future and include other sports codes,” said Uerikua.

The Tsumkwe soccer team played against Okahandja to open the 2022 soccer games, while the first netball match this year was between Omatako and Otavi to open the netball games.

The Okakarara Constituency soccer team is the defending champion, while the Grootfontein netball team is defending the netball trophy.

Winning constituencies in both netball and soccer games are normally awarded floating trophies.

Uerikua said the names of the 18 new regional soccer team members for the Under-20s and 12 names of the regional netball team, will also be announced on Sunday at the end of the tournament.
