A large number of parents flooded the two main high schools in Rehoboth on Tuesday in a bid to secure places for their children for the 2023 academic year.

Speaking to Nampa on the same day, the principal of Rehoboth High School, Jackie Jackson #Khariseb said since the school featured in the top 10 of the national rankings in the 2022 final examinations, the interest from parents to register their children at the school has doubled.

“We have a long line of parents outside. Our top 10 ranking has seen us receive an increased interest in the school from some of the parents,” #Khariseb said.

He added that they had proactively dealt with the Grade 8 applications last year and now only have to register those students who qualified.

However, he said that for Grade 10 priority is given to the feeder schools around Rehoboth.

The principal said that because of the tremendous increase in demand they will have to stop registration and refer everyone to the Regional Education Circuit (REC) office for placement.

At Dr Lemmer High School in Rehoboth, the principal, EP Meintjies said the registration was already done last year and they can now attend to the learners who are on the waiting list.

“We have already done registration last year and parents who were approved were already informed in September. The parents who are on the waiting list have now been forwarded to the REC office,” Meintjies said.

He said that they approved 260 Grade 8 learners and 20 Grade 10 learners that will join the Grade 9s who are automatically promoted.

The school gives their current students 15 days to register and confirm their places for the academic year before opening their doors for students on the waiting list.

Meintjies also said that even though Dr Lemmer did not appear in the national rankings, they are proud of their performance as the results show that in the Hardap Region, they had outperformed most schools.

He concluded by saying they also increased the number of students in Grade 11 in the Advanced Subsidiary (AS) level from 21 to 51.
