Windhoek:Acting Inspector-General of the Namibian Police Force, Major General Anne-Marie Nainda, has urged all Namibians to prioritize railway safety as a national issue rather than solely the responsibility of TransNamib.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Nainda spoke during the official launch of TransNamib Rail Safety Week 2026, emphasizing that railway incidents, which can result in loss of life, injuries, and economic losses, are often preventable. She highlighted the importance of responsible behavior, effective safety measures, and collaboration between authorities and communities in preventing such incidents.
Nainda stressed the role of community policing, noting that communities are crucial in identifying suspicious activities or unsafe conditions along railway lines. By involving community members in safety efforts, the police and TransNamib aim to spread safety messages effectively, particularly to those living near railway infrastructure.
She also emphasized the need for ongoing safety education beyond Rail Safety Week and called for practical actions from all stakeholders to address railway safety issues. The week's events kicked off with a level crossing awareness campaign in Windhoek's Elisenheim area.
