Rundu:Minister of Urban and Rural Development James Sankwasa has called on Swapo members involved in local authorities and regional councils to tackle internal inefficiencies, encourage accountability, and refrain from shielding misconduct for political purposes.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Sankwasa addressed these concerns at the annual general meeting of the Namibia National Mayors Forum in Rundu on Thursday. He emphasized that silence in the face of mismanagement and misconduct implicates party members in these wrongdoings.

Sankwasa highlighted the responsibilities of political leaders to address issues within their ranks rather than allowing them to persist unchallenged. He likened the situation to parenting, suggesting that failing to correct misconduct only perpetuates such behavior. He cautioned that protecting wrongdoing could harm the party's reputation and result in lost votes during elections.

He stated that it is crucial for Swapo members to take responsibility for resolving internal party issues rather than relying on opposition parties or external forces. Sankwasa urged members to prioritize the party's interests over individual protection and expressed concern over the rise of new political parties since Namibia's independence in 1990, prompting reflection on their increasing influence.

Sankwasa also encouraged party members to speak candidly, even with the upcoming party congress, noting that honest criticism, though potentially creating temporary adversaries, is essential for meaningful change. He underscored the necessity of effective management and financial accountability, urging leaders to fulfill their responsibilities and ensure proper management of public resources.
