President Hage Geingob has conferred State funerals on both Willem Konjore and Mburumba Kerina.

Konjore died in Windhoek on 11 June 2021 aged 76, while Kerina died on 14 June, also in Windhoek, at the age of 82.

Konjore served as a member of the Constituent Assembly in 1989 and deputy speaker of the National Assembly from 2000 to 2005. He also served as environment minister and was later transferred to the youth ministry in 2008.

Kerina also served as a member of the Constituent Assembly from 1989 to 1990; as a member of the National Assembly from 1990 to 1991 and a member of the National Council representing the Omaheke Region from 1998 until 2003.

Presidency Press Secretary Alfred Hengari in a statement on Wednesday said the remains of Konjore are to be interred at #Gabis in the Karasburg East Constituency on 26 June 2021, as agreed with his family, while the remains of Kerina will be interred on a date and place to be agreed to by his family.

“President Hage Geingob extends sincere condolences and sympathies to the families of these two outstanding statesmen who dedicated their lives to the liberation of the country and prosperity of all Namibians,” he said.

The Students Union of Namibia in a media statement on Thursday also paid tribute to Kerina and called on the Ministry of High Education and Innovation to rename one of the University of Namibia campuses after Kerina in order to honour his contribution to the country’s liberation struggle.
