Windhoek: With an impressive haul of 24 medals at the Commonwealth Games, Team Namibia is determined to continue its proud tradition when it competes at this year's championships. Since making its Commonwealth Games debut in 1994, Namibia has won five gold, four silver, and 15 bronze medals, establishing itself as a consistent medal contender on the international stage.According to Namibia Press Agency, Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) Chief Executive Officer Anri Parker highlighted that athletics and boxing have historically been the country's most successful medal-winning sports throughout its eight Commonwealth Games appearances. "Namibia's Commonwealth Games journey began unforgettably when sprint legend Frankie Fredericks won the country's first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men's 200 metres at the 1994 Games, while also claiming bronze in the 100 metres. Fredericks went on to cement his status as one of Africa's greatest sprinters," she said.Parker added that boxing has also bee n a cornerstone of Namibia's success, with champions such as Jafet Uutoni and Jonas Junias winning Commonwealth gold medals and reinforcing the country's reputation as a force in the ring. 'More recently, Team Namibia demonstrated its growing depth at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom, returning home with four bronze medals. Sprint star Christine Mboma, marathon veteran Helalia Johannes, mountain biker Alexander Miller, and Paralympian Ananias Shikongo all reached the podium, highlighting Namibia's ability to compete successfully across a broader range of sporting disciplines,' Parker said. She also noted that these achievements reflected decades of dedication from athletes, coaches, administrators, and support staff, while inspiring the next generation to build on the country's proud sporting legacy. "As Team Namibia looks ahead to the upcoming games, athletics and boxing once again offer some of the country's strongest medal prospects. However, for Team Namibia, success extends beyo nd the medal table. Every athlete has earned the honour of representing the nation, with the ambition of producing personal best performances, reaching finals, setting national records, and proudly flying the Namibian flag on the international stage," she said.Parker added that preparations for the Games have been a collective effort, with careful planning and logistical arrangements ensuring the team is ready to perform at its best. Team Namibia will compete in athletics, boxing, bowls, gymnastics, and swimming at this year's championships, which take place from 23 July to 02 August 2026.
