Three National Assembly employees vacate positions over alleged misappropriation of N.dollars 1.2 million

Three National Assembly employees have vacated their positions after allegedly stealing N.dollars 1.2 million from the institution.

This was revealed by Raphael Hangula, the National Assembly’s spokesperson, in a statement issued late Saturday.

“There have been some cases of financial irregularities involving three staff members, who were found to have misappropriated N.dollars 1 243 107.94 from the National Assembly,” Hangula revealed.

These cases, he says, were dealt with in accordance with the set regulations governing institutions of government.

The institution unleashed the State Finance Act to recover the funds, as it allows the head of any government office, ministry or agency to deduct the stolen money from a person’s salary or pension.

“One of the implicated staff members has been discharged and money has been recovered from the member’s pension. Another staff member has resigned and money has been recovered from his pension and leave gratuity,” Hangula said.

The third staff member allegedly resigned and the recovery process of state monies involved is underway, he added, without providing names of the implicated parties.

Hangula was hitting back at a widely circulated social media post by Affirmative Repositioning (AR) leader, Job Amupanda, in which he alleges that grand corruption at the lawmaking body is deliberately swept under the rug.

Amupanda on Friday gave the NA a five day ultimatum to fix the alleged corruption, warning that failure to do so would force him to ‘spill the beans’.

“As it stands, MPs (Members of Parliament) who are covering up the multimillion dollar parliamentary corruption are in breaching section 47 of the Anti-Corruption Act. Four days I have given them is for them to do what is necessary. They, including the 80-year-old, can be arrested! Act NOW!’ Amupanda tweeted on Saturday.

However, his assertions have been disputed by Hangula, who lambasted Amupanda as an agent of misinformation campaign against the National Assembly.

“The National Assembly does not cover up, nor condone, corrupt activities. The allegations leveled against the institution are devoid of any truth and only seek to mislead the public,” Hangula said.

“No multi-million corruption has taken place at the National Assembly as alleged by Job Amupanda on his social media platforms. Nor has the institution covered up corruption.”
