Kunene: The United Democratic Front (UDF) has announced its plans for the 26 November Regional Council and Local Authority elections, particularly targeting 'total control' of the Kunene Region. Currently, UDF holds two of the seven constituencies in the Kunene Region, after losing its third constituency (Kamanjab) to the Swapo Party during June's by-elections, which were necessitated by the resignation of former councillor Nico Somaeb. Somaeb took up a seat in the National Assembly in March under UDF's ticket.
According to Namibia Press Agency, UDF national spokesperson Mabasen Narib stated, "We have already hit the ground running with our campaigns, which are in full swing. UDF is still focused on gaining full control of the Kunene Region, and by winning four constituencies, we will regain our dominance." Narib expressed confidence that the party will recover and reclaim Kamanjab after losing by a narrow margin two months ago, with plans to assert influence in Outjo as well.
Narib highlighted that there has been a positive change within the party, and victory at Outjo and Kamanjab is possible as they equally plan to keep Khorixas and Sesfontein. He emphasized that strengthening the party's position in key areas is essential for its long-term political influence, with their manifesto in place to address issues affecting the region's residents. "We can only deliver on our promises by executing what we planned in our manifesto if we win these elections," he noted.
The UDF has introduced a shift in terms of candidates running for regional council and local authority positions, including youth and women on the lists. The party has endorsed Jacobus Namaseb as the sole candidate for the Kamanjab Constituency, while Sesfontein will continue with current councillor Bernadus ||Hoeb. Khorixas and Outjo will hold their internal primary elections on 16 August, along with other constituencies for local authority councillors.
Narib believes the party has capable leaders to guide the region, despite losing a key constituency, emphasizing that they are currently working diligently to maintain their hold on regional power.
