New york: The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution to extend the mandate of the UN Support Mission in Libya for a year, continuing until October 31, 2026.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Resolution 2796 was unanimously supported by the 15-member council, urging Libyan political institutions and key stakeholders to swiftly address outstanding politically contentious issues related to elections. The resolution calls for negotiations to ensure free, fair, transparent, and inclusive national presidential and parliamentary elections across the country as soon as possible, aiming to form a unified Libyan government.

The resolution also emphasizes the necessity for all Libyan stakeholders to take steps towards the reunification of Libya's political, economic, military, and security state institutions, while safeguarding the independence of the judiciary. It stresses that a military solution is not viable in Libya and calls on all parties to avoid violence or any actions that could escalate tensions, endanger civilians, or undermine the political process and the ceasefire agreement of October 23, 2020.

Furthermore, the resolution calls for the full implementation of the ceasefire agreement and urges UN member states to support its full implementation, including the withdrawal of all mercenaries, foreign fighters, and foreign forces from Libya without delay. The resolution also demands that all UN member states respect Libya's sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity, and national unity, and refrain from external interference that could undermine Libya's sovereignty or contribute to conflict and instability in Libya and the wider region.
