Windhoek: The University of Namibia (UNAM) has clarified that registration-related levies for eligible Namibian students are covered under the government's subsidised tertiary education funding model, despite such charges appearing on students' financial statements for the 2026 academic year.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the university on Tuesday released its compulsory minimum payment requirements for the 2026 registration period, indicating that Namibian students are required to pay N.dollars 6 975 at registration. The amount includes a tuition fee deposit of N.dollars 4 000, a registration fee of N.dollars 1 500, as well as connectivity, technology, and student administration levies.

In an interview with Nampa, UNAM spokesperson Simon Namesho confirmed that for Namibian students pursuing their first primary undergraduate qualification, these registration-related levies are fully covered by the government under the subsidised funding model. He explained that although these fees may still reflect on student accounts for administrative and accounting purposes, they will be settled by the government and are therefore not payable by students who meet the eligibility criteria.

Namesho emphasised that the funding model is eligibility-based and does not apply to all students. Those pursuing second or subsequent qualifications at the same or lower National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level, postgraduate students, and students with outstanding historical debt are not covered and remain responsible for applicable fees.

All outstanding balances from previous academic years must be cleared before registration, as government funding does not cover historical debt. Students outside the funding model are required to pay registration fees and minimum tuition deposits at the time of registration.

UNAM has urged students to familiarise themselves with the eligibility requirements of the subsidised funding model to avoid misunderstandings during the 2026 registration period.
