WHO Chief Refutes U.S. Reasons for Withdrawal as “Untrue”

Geneva: World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has labeled the reasons provided by the United States for its withdrawal from the global health body as "untrue." On the social media platform X, Tedros emphasized that this move endangers both U.S. and global safety.According to Namibia Press Agency, U.S. President Donald Trump, on the first day of his second term, signed an executive order on January 20, 2025, to begin the United States' formal exit from the United Nations' specialized agency. The UN received the official withdrawal notice two days later. As per the UN charter, this withdrawal will become effective one year from the notification date.Tedros commended the historical contributions of the United States as a founding member of the WHO, which has led to many of the organization's significant achievements. Despite this, he expressed concern over the U.S. decision, noting in his X post that the cited reasons for the withdrawal are unfounded. He further stated t hat this decision compromises the safety of both the United States and the global community, while expressing hope for the U.S. to reengage with the WHO in the future.Additionally, on Saturday, the WHO released a statement expressing regret over the U.S. withdrawal and refuting the allegations made by the Trump administration. The WHO highlighted that the issues stemming from the U.S. withdrawal would be discussed at the WHO Executive Board's regular meeting on February 2, and at the World Health Assembly's annual meeting in May 2026.The WHO Secretariat will act based on the guidance and advice from its governing bodies to address the situation, as stated by a WHO press official in an email to Xinhua. The United States is also reported to have outstanding membership dues, with an estimated total of 278 million U.S. dollars, according to U.S.-based National Public Radio (NPR).
