Mururani:A 22-year-old farmer from Mururani village in the Kavango West Region has successfully doubled his herd of goats from 10 to 20, making his Ncamane project one of 24 goat-rearing initiatives in the Mankumpi Constituency.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Piet Gaeseb, who keeps the animals at Kap en Bou in Mururani village, faces challenges such as inadequate water, lack of veterinary medicine, and insufficient materials to strengthen the kraal. Despite these obstacles, Gaeseb remains the sole member of the project, which initially started with three young people in 2025.

Gaeseb expressed his satisfaction with the project, noting that it has become a vital source of support for his family of seven. He left school in 2012 due to a lack of parental support and now hopes his progress will motivate others in the San community to engage in productive activities.

Kavango West Governor Verna Sinimbo recently visited the project, commending Gaeseb for his perseverance and urging other young people and marginalised community members to draw inspiration from his experience. Sinimbo highlighted the potential for training prospective beneficiaries in farming.

Mankumpi Constituency Councillor Lukas Muha explained that the goat programme, which began in 2018, operates as a revolving scheme under the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development. Beneficiaries enter a three-year agreement, after which 10 goats are returned and reallocated. However, the programme faces challenges such as inadequate veterinary support and infrastructure.

Muha emphasized the importance of livestock management training and the need for a constituency development fund to address these issues. The constituency aims to expand the programme by distributing more goats next year.

Gaeseb, grateful for the government's support, stated that the project now benefits his entire family and aims to change perceptions of the community.
