Talismanus: Minister of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform, Inge Zaamwani, has urged communal farmers to embrace climate-resilient farming methods as a crucial step towards successfully transitioning to commercial farming. The minister outlined key strategies for sustainable agricultural development during the official opening of the sixth Otjombinde Agricultural Show at Talismanus in the Omaheke Region.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the event was hosted by the Otjombinde Farmers Association (OTJOFA). Zaamwani emphasized the need for implementing rotational grazing, de-bushing programmes, and ensuring livestock numbers align with the carrying capacity of the land. She highlighted the importance of promoting soil and water conservation, climate-smart agriculture, collective resource management, and the empowerment of women and youth.
Zaamwani urged farmers to adopt drought-tolerant crops, efficient irrigation systems, and innovative farming practices that increase resilience against climate change. She called for strengthening community-based institutions and involving traditional leaders to ensure sustainable and equitable land use. The minister also stressed the need for expanding access to land, finance, training, and modern technologies to ensure no farmer is left behind.
Furthermore, Zaamwani reiterated the government's commitment to supporting this transformation through programmes such as the Communal Land Development Programme, green scheme projects, and the Namibia Agricultural Mechanisation. She stated that these programmes are designed to enhance productivity and assist communal farmers in transitioning to commercial farming successfully.
In closing, Zaamwani extended her congratulations to the farmers and OTJOFA for organizing the event, emphasizing that the future of the country's agricultural sector lies in sustainability and transformation.
