Katima Mulilo: The Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) on Sunday began its deployment of 127 polling officials from Katima Mulilo to the Kabbe South Constituency at Nakabolelwa, ahead of the scheduled by-elections in the constituency on Tuesday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, ECN Returning Officer for Kabbe South, Kahimbi Masule, stated from Nakabolelwa that the deployment exercise was progressing smoothly. Most teams, particularly those assigned to islands in the flood plains, were expected to leave the constituency office before 17h00 on Sunday. Teams allocated to nearby polling stations were scheduled to depart on Monday morning.
Masule confirmed that logistical arrangements were in order and police officers were present to ensure security. She anticipated that all teams would be in their designated stations by Monday morning, with their setups completed.
There are 24 fixed teams, each consisting of five members and two police officers for security purposes. Masule also mentioned that seven mobile teams would visit over 16 selected villages in the constituency. At the time, no significant transport issues had been reported, and ECN was preparing for a free and fair election on Tuesday.
A total of 3,509 registered voters in the Kabbe South Constituency are expected to participate in the by-election to elect a new constituency councillor. The seat became vacant in March when former councillor John Likando resigned to join the National Assembly. The election will see Swapo Party candidate Raymond Kamwi Sezuni compete against Independent Patriots for Change's Sydney Sitali Shamwazi.
