Pregnant Woman Strangled to Death in Aminuis

A 25-YEAR-OLD pregnant woman was allegedly strangled to death by her boyfriend at the Otjongombe village in the Aminuis Constituency of the Omaheke region on Saturday morning.

The suspect, a 35-year-old, also lives in the same village.

According to sources the couple was returning from a night of drinking when an argument broke out between them at about 04h00. It is not known what sparked the argument.

Police deputy commissioner Marcellus Maritshane confirmed the incident and said a murder docket had been opened in connection with the woman’s death and that the suspect has been arrested and is in custody.

Maritshane said early investigations have confirmed that the deceased was pregnant, and on treatment for high blood pressure.

“We are waiting for the results of a post mortem to determine the exact cause of death. Once we know that, we will be able to determine the course of our investigations,” he said.

The incident happened a stone’s throw away from the Riruako clan’s homestead, where revellers were enjoying festivities as more couples wedded in honour of the late OvaHerero paramount chief Kuaima Riruako. A total of 22 couples married on 5 July in Riruako’s honour – a week after the chief’s burial. Last weekend’s mass marriage was the second, and 10 couples took their vows.

The identities of both the accused and the deceased could not be independently verified.
