Access to information is the mother of all and without it, people will be in the dark because they cannot exercise their rights to freedom of expression

Access to information is the mother of all and without it, people will be in the dark because they cannot exercise their rights to freedom of expression, Namibia Media Trust Executive Director, Gwen Lister, has said.

Lister was speaking at the Namibia University of Science and Technology Media Fair held at the university's premises in the capital under theme catalyzing the Digital Economy yesterday.

She said Namibia can become a true knowledge-based society where people make informed decisions and opinions just because they have them but they have not really bothered to really do much about it or find out why certain things happen.

It is important that Namibians realise that it is a right to have certain information because the government is only the custodian of that information but not the actual owner of it, it belongs to the people and the more information they have the better choices they make, stressed Lister.

Internet Governance Forum Chairperson, Natasha Tibinyane, who also attended the event, said the public need to have access to information but there are numbers of barriers blocking it from reaching the public.
