African Stars launch Under-19 football team

Namibia Premier League (NPL) outfit and 2019 Standard Bank Top Eight winners, African Stars launched their Under-19 (U19) Football team here on Wednesday.

The Katutura-based outfit who have won the NPL title on four occasions, announced their plans of forming an U19 team that will be used as their feeder team at the Jan Mor Sports Field.

African Stars chairperson, Patrick Kauta told Nampa on Wednesday that as part of the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) club licensing, they decided to start a youth team which will complement their youth development structure are Van Rhyn Primary School.

Our goal is to have these boys competing in the second division or third division during the 2019/2020 season when football has normalised in this country. This team will be the feeder team of African Stars and they will also represent the club at youth competition that we see fit for them outside the country, he said.

African Stars captain, Pat-NavinUanivi, who is the co-coach of the youth team stated that the initiative from the club's management should be uploaded because they are giving a number of youths an opportunity to play football at an early age in a professional set-up.

In our years when we started at Stars as football players we never had a foundation as the was only a senior team, but as a co-coach of the team I will help the management with realising this dream of youth development as we want to one day see these boys compete for places in the senior football team, he said.

Uanivi added that he has been send to attend coaching courses by the management and his dream is to one day become the senior football team coach when he hangs up his boots.
