Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) Public Relations and Communication Manager, Lina Ndengu said everything is in place and ready for the upcoming by-election for Katima Mulilo Urban.

Ndengu said this in an interview with Nampa on Monday while providing an update on the election which is set to take place on 25 August 2021.

The election was prompted by the position left vacant after former Katima Mulilo Urban Constituency councillor John Mukaya died in a car accident in May this year.

The election is being held in line with the Electoral Act of 2014, which allows for the holding of a by-election within 90 days of a vacancy arising.

Ndengu said the polling officials are currently busy on the ground with final training and voting materials will be dispatched from the headquarters in Windhoek on 23 August 2021.

This will be followed by the dispatch of materials on 24 August from the police station in Katima Mulilo to the polling venues, while polling officials together with police officers will overnight at the polling venues to guard the voting materials as per the norm every time elections are held.

“The voting will then commence on 25 August at 07h00 in the morning until 21h00 in the evening,” said Ndengu.

Four political parties; Popular Democratic Movement, Independent Patriots for Change, Swapo Party and the National Democratic Party, and two independent candidates; Kubwina Poniso Miller and Nkando Gibson Kabuna have registered to contest for the election.
