Visiting South African Rugby Team the Blue Bulls proved to be too good for Namibia’s select side the Welwitschias when they beat the locals 47-12 during the Goodwill Challenge match at the Hage Geingob Stadium on Saturday.

The match was organised by local Bulls fan and Chief Executive Officer of Officeconomix Paul Oosthuizen, and used by the Namibia Rugby Union as preparation for the Welwitschias in their quest to qualify for next year’s Rugby World Cup.

Speaking after the match, Welwitschias captain Prince Gaoseb said even though the match was tough as the visitors had an upper hand from the start to the finish, it had provided them with a lot of information for the World Cup Qualifiers preparations.

“We just lacked a little bit on the set pieces and especially on the lineouts. We need to try and fix those and other areas where we lacked. There is a fair amount of chances for everyone who played today to make it to the final squad that will play in the world cup qualifiers,” he said.

According to the captain, it is important for the team to play as many matches as possible with quality opposition as this helps them gauge their levels of readiness and quality.

Assistant Coach Chrysander Botha concurred with his captain saying “We need to work on our scrums and lineouts. It is a major wake up for us and this is why we need to play such games as it helps us identify our shortcomings. These boys played only four club games this year, this is a step in the right direction.”

Botha said as a technical team they learnt a lot of lessons from the game which will help them plan for the upcoming training camp in Stellenbosch, South Africa next week.

For that training camp, 35 local-based players will be joined by seven overseas-based players in the camp before selecting a 28-man squad to travel to France for the qualifiers in June.
