Windhoek: Castlebet Namibia unveiled a N.dollars 300 000 sponsorship package for the Namibia Horse Racing Association (NHRA) on Tuesday. The injection of funds comes as a relief for the NHRA, which has recently struggled to secure the financial backing necessary to sustain its calendar. The lack of funding previously placed a heavy financial burden on horse clubs and owners, as prize pots decreased during national events.
According to Namibia Press Agency, speaking at the announcement of the sponsorship in Windhoek, Castlebet Namibia spokesperson David Agusto noted that the company has been impressed by the rapid growth of horse racing across the country and is committed to fostering its further development. 'We are proud to be able to put some decent financial backing behind the horse races. We want to be involved and support grassroots sport more,' Agosto said. He further noted that the company values its clientele and considers it a privilege to reinvest in the communities and sporting events that reflect its customers' interests.
The NHRA welcomed the partnership, with the association's spokesperson, Chantelle Mouton, describing it as a milestone for the sport. 'This is indeed a historic day in the horse racing fraternity as sponsorship has dried up and the association struggled to pay decent prizes,' she said, adding that only MTC remained as the sole remaining major partner for the NHRA's July Winter Cup. The N.dollars 300 000 will be utilised to host the inaugural Castlebet Cup, scheduled to take place in July 2026.
Mouton urged owners and trainers to begin preparations immediately, noting that the sponsorship will translate into higher prize purses and a more professional competitive environment. She further said the NHRA remains open to further collaborations as there are still opportunities for sponsors to back other major races across various regions. Mouton said the association's long-term vision is to decentralise the sport and bring high-level horse racing to local communities throughout Namibia.
