Civics crowned MTC NFA Cup Aweh champions

Civics Football Club won their third Namibia Football Association (NFA) cup after beating Mighty Gunners 3-2 at the Vineta Sports stadium in Swakopmund on Saturday.

The Civilians as they are affectionally known by their followers, last lifted the Football Association trophy in 2008.

On Saturday, the Civilians opened the scoring through Aubrey Amseb but the Gunners equalised through Vernon Klazen, before Quinton Kuruseb made it 2-1 for the Civilians just minutes before the halftime break.

In the second half Marcel Papama scored one more goal for the Civilians to extend their lead to 3-1, but with time running out Gunners substitute Shivolo Mutubulwa scored their second goal, which proved to be in vein as they went down 3-2 after 90 minutes of football.

Civics walked away with N.dollars 500 000 for being crowned MTC NFA Cup Aweh winners, while Gunners walked away with N.dollars 250 000 for finishing as runner-up.

Blue Waters who beat Young African 3-1 in an earlier game to finish third and walk away with N.dollars 150 000, while fourth-placed finishers Young African received N.dollars 100 000.

Speaking to the media after the match Civics FC chairperson, Donnelly Nell, said winning the NFA cup is an indication of the hardwork and commitment the players put in throughout the competition.

“It has taken us over 10 years to win a trophy and we are busy building this team, this win is motivation for all the time spent in building the team. We hope football will continue after this because the players are now motivated and having good spirits after this win,” he said.

Individual players that were awarded on the day include Civics goalkeeper, Viril Namaseb, who was selected as Goalkeeper of the tournament. Gunners’ Asser Hara-Amseb scooped the top goalscorer title with his seven goals, while teammate and captain Olsen Ameb was named the player of the tournament.

Meanwhile, Willem Haitembu and Hangula Hangula were named the Referee and Assistant Referee of the MTC NFA Cup Aweh 2021 respectively.
