The state – of – the – art Kunene Regional Police Headquarters in Opuwo is projected to be completed by November 2024 , following the resumption of construction after a year – long hiatus . The building was originally intended for completion last year , but work was suspended in 2023 when work stopped due to contract disputes between the government and the contractor . Construction resumed last month . The initial construction began in January 2020 with a budget of N . dollars 65 million , and the project is now reported to be 76 per cent complete . Confirming the details to Nampa without delving into specifics regarding the suspension of one of the region ‘ s largest projects , Kunene Namibian Police Force ( NamPol ) Regional Commander , Commissioner James Karunjoojo Nderura , stated that the construction was supposed to have been completed last year but was delayed due to issues between the contractor and the government . ” What I can tell you now is that construction work has recommenced with a new contra
ctor after the project was halted for more than a year due to various challenges between the previous contractors and the Ministry of Works and Transport , including financial issues ,” he said . According to Nderura , the remaining 24 per cent is expected to be completed by November 2024 , allowing the office to be inaugurated in January 2025 to provide much – needed services to the community . Nderura noted that , once finished , the headquarters would offer sufficient space for the various police departments and introduce additional services to the region ‘ s population . ” Once completed , we will move all the divisions to the new premises , as we are currently housed in one small building , which makes work challenging ,” he said . Nderura also mentioned that the Crime Investigation Division will have its own dedicated space to focus on serious criminal investigations , ensuring cases are resolved promptly and without delay . The new office will also house its own vehicle clearance unit , sparing people
from having to travel long distances to have their vehicles cleared . In light of the headquarters ‘ construction resuming , Nderura ‘ s contract was extended for another year . NamPol Inspector General , Joseph Shikongo , extended Nderura ‘ s tenure as head of the force in the Kunene region earlier this year to oversee the completion of the regional headquarters . Although Nderura turned 60 this year , he will not retire from the police until September next year .
